+沉思菩萨(思惟菩萨,思维菩萨)的形象最早出现于公元2-3世纪，在古代犍陀罗（今巴基斯坦西北部和阿富汗东北部地区，是丝绸之路的重要枢纽及佛教传播的关键节点）的贵霜王朝（公元1-3世纪）时期。
+该菩萨的右手抬至头部一侧的太阳穴处，头部向旁侧倾斜，呈深度沉思之态。他坐在一张柳条凳上，左腿悬垂，右腿抬起呈水平姿势，脚搁在另一侧的膝盖上。左手持一朵莲花苞。他身着腰衣（dhoti）和披于肩上的围巾，衣褶厚重，源于希腊罗马式的服饰传统。菩萨身有光环，头戴一顶饰有不明冠饰的头巾。另见藏品编号 M.85.9。
+犍陀罗的沉思菩萨造像表现的是悉达多·乔达摩王子在证悟成佛（传统年代为公元前563-483年）、成为历史上的释迦牟尼佛之前，进行“初禅”以思惟生命痛苦之因的情景。沉思菩萨的形象于5世纪传入中国，至6世纪传入朝鲜半岛和日本，在这些地区通常被认定为未来佛——弥勒菩萨。例如，首尔韩国国立博物馆藏有一尊推定年代为6世纪末的韩国沉思菩萨像（藏品号：本馆 2789）。
