This elaborately-robed bodhisattva is an image of Guanyin, or Avalokiteshvara, who became widely worshipped as a goddess of compassion. This figure is from northern Shaanxi province, possibly the Wutai mountains, an ancient holy site of Buddhist pilgrimage.
