2016 National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage catalogue entries:

'The Avalokitesvara in White Robe (白衣觀音) is one of the thirty-three manifestations of the bodhisattva widely painted and worshipped by Korean and Chinese Buddhists. In this painting, he is depicted alone in a standing position on lotus flowers, emerging from dark background. He has delicate, or even small features for his round face. The white robe flows from his white coif, and the jewels and the heavenly shawls (天衣) are hung down over the robe. There are gold lines of hexagonal flower patterns on the white robe and gold dots on the inner purple lining.

The Avalokitesvara crosses his hands and holds a kundika (ewer). In the front of his rown, an avatar of Amitabha is depicted in a triad with Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta, which makes this painting unique. The Avalokitesvara has meditative features, is naturally proportioned, and wears intricately patterned robes. This painting dates to the late Joseon, at a time when there was a renewed interest in earlier resplendent Buddhist arts.'

'백의관음은 관음보살의 33 응신 가운데 하나로, 한국과 중국의 불교미술에서 널리 표현되었다. 이 관음보살상은 단독 입상으로 조성되었는데 어두운 배경에 떠오르듯 묘사되어 있으며 두 송이의 연꽃을 밟고 서 있다. 얼굴은 둥그스름한데 비해 이목구비는 상대적으로 작으며 날카로운 필치로 묘사되었다. 흰색의 법의는 머리의 흰 두건에서 이어져 아래로 이어지며 그 위로 영락과 천의 자락이 자연스러운 곡선을 그리며 흘러내린다. 백색 법의 위에 금분으로 그린 연속 직선은 육각형의 꽃무늬를 구성하고 있다. 옷자락 안쪽은 자주색으로 칠하고 그 위에 금분으로 점렬문양을 빼곡하게 그렸다. 두 손은 앞에 모아 주전자 형태의 정병을 들고 있다. 흰 두건 아래에 드러난 높은 보관에는 아미타불의 화불이 관음과 세지보살과 함께한 삼존형식으로 묘사되어있어 개성적이다. 인체 표현과 옷주름의 자연스러움, 세부에 이르기까지 섬세하게 장식한 솜씨, 명상적이고 이지적인 표정처리 등은 이 작품이 조선 전기 불화의 영향을 받은 조선 후기의 작품일 가능성을 보여준다.'

白衣观音是观音菩萨三十三种应化身之一，在中韩佛教信众中广为绘制与供奉。此画以立轴形式呈现，观音菩萨独自立于莲花之上，从幽暗的底色背景中浮现而出。菩萨面庞圆润，五官刻画精致而含蓄。白色风帽覆首，素袍垂拂，璎珞庄严与天衣飘带悬垂于袈裟之上。白色法衣上以金线描绘六角团花纹样，内衬紫色裙裾则饰以金箔细点，工艺精细入微。

观音双手交叠，持一净瓶。尤为独特的是，其宝冠正面以微型画形式描绘了阿弥陀佛与观音、势至二胁侍组成的西方三圣像。菩萨神态静穆安详，身量比例匀称自然，衣饰纹样繁复精致。此作系朝鲜王朝后期绘制，时值佛教艺术领域重新追摹前代璀璨遗风之际。
