The Buddha taming the enraged elephant Nalagiri

The Buddha’s evil cousin sent an enraged elephant to attack him. The Buddha held his ground and is said to have suffused the elephant with loving-kindness of mind. The elephant knelt in submission. This story can be understood as symbolizing our need to subdue our uncontrolled and violent animal instincts.

Here the Buddha is accompanied by a fellow monk carrying a staff and a bowl for accepting donations of food. From the Buddha’s right hand radiate lions, representing the power of the Buddha’s compassion.

佛陀调伏醉象纳拉吉里

佛陀的恶从弟提婆达多遣一头狂醉的恶象欲加害佛陀。佛陀安然驻立，以慈心三昧之力加持大象，象即跪地驯服。此故事喻示众生需调伏自身狂暴不羁的动物本能。

此像中，佛陀身旁随有一位比丘，持锡杖并托钵。佛陀右手放射光明，化现狮子之形，象征佛陀慈悲的威德之力。
